Azerbaijan has provided housing for around 300,000 internally displaced persons affected by the conflict and occupation of the country's territories, Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, said at an event within the framework of WUF13 in Baku.
Report quotes him as saying during the years of conflict, especially in the early 1990s following Armenia's occupation of Azerbaijani territories, the country faced serious housing challenges.
"At that time, the Government of Azerbaijan provided internally displaced persons and refugees with all possible support, including housing, accessible food supplies, and other social services," Hajiyev noted.
He emphasized that the state also introduced a number of social benefits to improve the well-being of displaced persons.
"The main demand of these people was to return to their native lands and live there in safe and dignified conditions," he said.
According to Hajiyev, despite the difficult conditions of that period, Azerbaijan took important steps to improve the housing situation of internally displaced persons.
"About 300,000 housing units were built and handed over for use by internally displaced persons, creating more comfortable living conditions," he added.
