Gurib-Fakim: Women should be involved in decision-making on urban development

Women's full participation in urban development decision-making processes must be ensured, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the first female president of the Republic of Mauritius and a biodiversity scientist, author, global advisor, member of the Board of Trustees, and member of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center (NGIC), said at the Women's Assembly at WUF13, Report informs.

"Their voices must be heard, and their unique experiences integrated into urban planning and development processes," she emphasized.

According to Gurib-Fakim, one of the key aspects of gender equality is inclusive economic opportunities.

"This includes equal access to economic opportunities in cities, eliminating the gender pay gap, ensuring fair working conditions, creating inclusive workplaces, supporting women's entrepreneurship, and equal access to education and skills development programs," she stated.

Gurib-Fakim ​​also noted the importance of flexible working conditions and taking into account the specificities of urbanization when formulating urban development policies.

"The need for flexible work arrangements, especially for parents and, above all, for single caregivers, must be addressed," she said.

According to her, urbanization is not only a problem for cities but also a complex interaction between rural and urban populations.

"Many politicians and decision-makers still fail to recognize the interconnectedness of rural and urban experiences when developing policies," she noted.

Gurib-Fakim ​​emphasized that unlocking the potential of the female labor force in urban areas will yield significant economic benefits.
