Great Britain welcomes decisions of Supreme Court of Azerbaijan

British Embassy issued a statement on the review of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan of the cases of Ilgar Mammadov, chair of Republican Alternative (REAL) party and Rasul Jafarov, human rights defender, on April 23:

"The British Embassy welcomes the Supreme Court acquittals of Ilgar Mammadov and Rasul Jafarov, in line with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights on their unconditional release. We encourage further positive steps such as the implementation of the other European Court of Human Rights judgments as well as taking measures to ensure freedom of speech and expression", - statement reads.

Notably, the criminal case of REAL Party chairman Ilgar Mammadov was considered yesterday at the plenary session of Azerbaijan's Supreme Court.

According to the decision, the criminal case against Mammadov was terminated on acquittal grounds. Ilgar Mammadov will be paid compensation of AZN 234 thousand for moral damage, in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Court.
