Ghada Abdel Latif: Cities cannot be sustainable without safety for women

The Women's Assembly held within the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku carries special importance, as it connects regional approaches in urban development with global perspectives, Ghada Abdel Latif, architect and manager of the Wearable Sustainable City project told Report.

Ghada Abdel Latif noted that today, women propose human‑centered solutions that combine resilience, safety, mobility, inclusivity, and everyday urban life.

She added that in many countries, women's participation in urban planning processes remains limited, as decision‑making systems are often dominated by men and disconnected from real community needs.

"If women do not feel safe, and lack access to transport, infrastructure, representation, and engagement, then a city cannot truly be considered sustainable."

Abdel Latif said the most inspiring aspect of the Women's Assembly in Baku is the opportunity to turn women's voices into real influence on city development and international cooperation. She emphasized that the assembly's core message is that inclusive cities are stronger, smarter, and more sustainable.

"I hope this forum will foster long‑term participation, partnerships, practical initiatives, and greater involvement of women in shaping the cities of the future," she added.
