Curbelo: Cuba considers New Urban Agenda key to sustainable urban development

Cuba views the New Urban Agenda as a key tool for the sustainable development of its cities and continues to implement territorial planning programs despite economic constraints, Antonio Curbelo, Vice President of the National Institute of Territorial Planning and Urbanism of Cuba, said during a panel discussion at WUF13 in Baku, Report informs.

He stated that Cuba, despite current economic difficulties, continues to develop its national territorial and urban planning system.

According to Curbelo, Cuba has a national urban policy implemented through the Law on Territorial Planning and Urbanism.

"This law defines the powers and functions of government bodies at the national, provincial, and municipal levels," he said.

Furthermore, the country has a national plan for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, which includes eight strategic directions. This plan ensures the comprehensive development of cities at both the national and municipal levels.

Corbelo noted that the key instruments are the National Territorial and Urban Planning Framework, as well as the territorial and urban plans of the provinces and municipalities.
