Mexico City is preparing to formulate a new urban agenda by 2030, Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada told Report on the sidelines of WUF13 in Baku.
She stated that as Azerbaijan passes the baton for hosting the World Urban Forum jointly with UN-Habitat, the focus in the coming years will be on implementing the 2030 agenda.
"Today, the president of Azerbaijan, together with UN-Habitat, passed the baton to us. We anticipate that in 2028, the main theme of the forum will be the discussion of the 2030 agenda – this is the end of an important period during which the UN and various countries have set the goal of reducing inequality, redistributing resources, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals," she noted.
Brugada emphasized that in 2028, the focus will be on formulating a new global urban agenda with the participation of cities around the world.
"We will focus on discussing housing policy, the right to the city, and urban development. These will be key topics," added the Mexico City mayor.
Responding to a question about the possible theme of WUF14 in Mexico, Brugada noted that the central theme will be reconsidering the existing urban agenda in the context of the 2030 goals.
"We know that one agenda already exists, but as I heard at all the sessions, there is a pressing need to reconsider a new urban agenda. This is precisely what will be the subject of discussion – what new goals we set for 2030, what rights and objectives we define, including housing as a human right, affordable housing, and issues like gentrification, and how we will address them," she concluded.
