China attaches great importance to the role of cities in climate change and views them as a key factor in implementing climate policy.
Report informs that Wang Shengjun, chief economist at China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, said this while speaking at a meeting of the Baku Sustainability Coalition for Urban Climate Action and Sustainable Urbanization held as part of WUF13 in Baku.
According to him, the course of renewal and growth is aimed at achieving "high-quality, safe and sustainable development," and is also based on a people-centered approach and the use of urban development opportunities to modernize the urban environment.
"We continue to adhere to a concept focused on people's needs and use urban development opportunities to promote Chinese President Xi Jinping's renewed vision. This is the driving force of renewal aimed at creating a more beautiful and safer urban environment. We must modernize cities and make them ‘smart'," he said.
Wang Shengjun highlighted four main areas of urban transformation: developing low-carbon infrastructure, increasing the safety and resilience of cities, developing digital and "smart" urban governance, and improving housing policy.
He added that housing must meet the requirements of safety, comfort, environmental friendliness and intelligence.
