Book on Azerbaijan's role in Eurasian energy presented in Brussels

A presentation of the book "Azerbaïdjan: Géopolitique de l'énergie d'une Eurasie en mutation" ("Azerbaijan: The Energy Geopolitics of a Changing Eurasia") by Samuel Furfari was held in Brussels. The event was organized by Azerbaijan's Mission to the European Union.

According to Report's European bureau, in his new work, the author examines Azerbaijan's growing strategic importance within the evolving energy architecture of Eurasia.

Furfari's interest in Azerbaijan began in 2005 when he attended the inauguration ceremony of the Azerbaijani section of the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan oil pipeline in Baku. At the time, he was working at the Energy Directorate of the European Commission. He noted that the event was a revelation for him.

"Especially considering that the EU was not involved in this major achievement in any way," he emphasized.

"Azerbaijan today is a key player and an important source of energy supplies for the EU. It is neither Russia nor Iran, yet it is a key player," Furfari said, adding that this explains the strong interest in the country and the broader Eurasian region.

The book provides an overview of the history of oil production in Azerbaijan, its significant hydrocarbon reserves and natural gas resources, as well as its growing importance in diversifying energy supplies to Europe.

According to Furfari, fossil fuels will continue to remain an important energy source, and a complete transition away from them is impossible even in the long term. Consequently, the role of partners such as Azerbaijan will remain significant in the future.

The book also places particular emphasis on Azerbaijan's geopolitical position at the crossroads of East and West, its relations with European Union, Russia, Iran, Israel, and other regional partners. It highlights the country's role not only as an energy supplier but also as a key transport corridor offering a reliable alternative connection between Asia and Europe.
