Singh: People should be able to return to their homeland without fear of discrimination

The right of internally displaced persons to return to their native lands involves more than just crossing physical borders, Virring Prabjot Singh, Legal Counsel for the Sikh Federation International in Canada, said during discussions on "The Right of Return and Decolonization: Restoration of Delayed Historical Justice," Report informs.

"People must have the right to reconnect with their homeland, heritage, and sacred places without fear of discrimination or political punishment," he noted.

In this context, June Soomer, a member of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, emphasized the importance of promptly providing effective compensation that is proportionate to the severity of the violations and the damage caused.

The discussions were organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
