Babatunde Ahonsi calls for urban sustainability to be placed at center of global agenda

The recent earthquake in Türkiye has highlighted the need to rethink urban planning and strengthen urban resilience, Babatunde Ahonsi, UN Resident Coordinator in Türkiye, said at an event during the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.

According to him, this tragedy has demonstrated the scale of the physical vulnerability of cities and the systemic interdependencies that shape the risks of the 21st century.

"However, this tragedy presents a significant opportunity – to transform the recovery process into an agenda for sustainability, sustainable development, and inclusiveness. This is important not only for protecting people and the economy, but also for reducing inequality. This is why urban resilience must be at the center of both national recovery strategies and the global processes at COP31," he added.
