Azerbaijani professor gets elected to UN Human Rights Committee

At the 42nd Meeting of States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) in New York, a candidate from Azerbaijan was elected to the UN Human Rights Committee for the 2027–2030 term, Report informs referring to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
Candidates from 16 countries competed for nine vacant seats on the ICCPR.
Fuad Zarbiyev, a professor of international law at the Graduate Institute of International Relations in Geneva, nominated by Azerbaijan, received the most votes in the first round of voting, securing the support of 131 countries.
The UN Human Rights Committee is the body that oversees implementation of the 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The Committee, composed of 18 independent experts, reviews the implementation of the obligations of states parties to the ICCPR, playing an important role in the protection of human rights.
