Azerbaijan demonstrates a concrete example of how regional cooperation can transition from political ambitions to practical implementation, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmytro Shlapachenko said at the Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).
According to Shlapachenko, cited by Report, issues of energy interconnectivity are closely linked to the development of transport corridors.
"When it comes to energy, I am very inspired by the example of Azerbaijan. I believe that Azerbaijan demonstrates a concrete example of how regional cooperation can move from political ambitions to practical implementation," he noted.
Shlapachenko emphasized that existing geopolitical differences affect the distribution and supply of energy, as well as the opportunities to derive economic benefits from energy cooperation.
He highlighted the project to build a submarine energy cable across the Black Sea, which is set to connect Azerbaijan and Georgia to European electricity markets via Romania.
"For me, this is a concrete example of how countries can think outside the box, find opportunities for interaction, and create mutually beneficial projects," the UN representative said.
He recalled that the feasibility study for the project was completed in 2024. Subsequently, a joint venture involving Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary was established to advance the initiative.
"Regardless of existing geopolitical differences, this is a very concrete initiative capable of bringing benefits to all its participants," Shlapachenko added.
