Azer Aliyev: Zangazur Corridor to increase transit potential of Azerbaijan and region

The role of the Middle Corridor project in the international arena is growing rapidly, and the opening of the Zangazur Corridor will be another impetus for the development of the transport and transit potential not only of Azerbaijan, but of the entire region, Azer Aliyev, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport Policy of the Ministry of Transport and Digital Development, said at the round table “Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan: new horizons of cooperation” in Baku, Report informs.

He noted that the construction of roads and railways, as well as seaports remains a topical issue for Azerbaijan. “This will make it possible to turn our country into an international hub, in particular, it will ensure the development of transit potential,” he said.

“As part of the Middle Corridor project, Azerbaijan continues to develop and expand the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project. This route is an integral part of the Middle Corridor,” the representative of the Ministry of Transport noted.

Azer Aliyev also added that the opening of the Zangazur Corridor will be an impetus for the development of the transport and transit potential not only of Azerbaijan, but of the entire region.

“I would like to remind that we have begun construction of the second stage of the Baku port, within which it is planned to increase the annual transshipment capacity to 20 million tons and 500,000 TEU containers,” he said.

The expert also noted the rapid growth in the volume of container cargo transportation in the Caspian Sea. This may require dredging in ports, he added.
