At present, more than one billion people worldwide lack access to water, Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, said during the session held within the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.
Rossbach emphasized that Azerbaijan recently demonstrated how to manage extreme situations during heavy rainfall: "Precipitation exceeded normal levels, yet we witnessed how the host country managed the challenge. Floods, heat waves, landslides, and other events bring climate and housing issues to the forefront of discussions. Today, more than one billion people worldwide lack access to water and electricity. These debates will be reflected in the interim review of the New Urban Agenda. We have failed in addressing informal settlements. We could not prevent the problem, and it continues to grow."
