Globally, 60% of women who are murdered are killed by their partners, Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, said during a roundtable at the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.
The director underscored that this figure highlights serious challenges: "In many places, women's housing provision is inadequate. Their safety, health, rights, and entitlements are not taken into account."
Rossbach added that poor housing provision also deprives women of education rights: "They are not only deprived of the right to education but also fall behind in land ownership rights. Such deprivation can weaken women and embolden others to commit crimes against them."
She stressed that lack of safe housing is the starting point of gender-based violence: "If women are not provided with safe housing, they either remain in violent environments or risk poverty and homelessness by choosing another life. This shows once again that housing policy is not only about providing living space but also about human security and social protection."
