The initialing of the peace agreement in Washington on August 8, with the participation of US President Donald Trump, is a historic milestone for the Caucasus region after decades of hostility and bloody conflicts, Elchin Amirbayov, Representative of Azerbaijan's President on special assignments, said in an interview with I24 News TV, Report informs.
He stated that this agreement is a very crucial step forward in normalizing relations between the two countries: "Currently, this progress is just the initialing of the agreement, not the final signing. For further progress, Armenia needs to take concrete steps, especially by changing its Constitution to eliminate territorial claims against Azerbaijan."
The diplomat emphasized that US President Donald Trump's personal involvement and diplomatic weight were decisive in achieving this result: "I hope that this process will open a new era in the Caucasus based on cooperation, stability, and economic progress."
When asked about Azerbaijan's growing role as a mediator, especially between Iran and Israel, Amirbayov stated that Azerbaijan has pursued a multi-vector foreign policy since gaining independence in 1991: "We build relationships based on mutual respect and sovereignty principles, including relations with Israel and Iran."
According to him, Azerbaijan intends to present itself as a natural platform for dialogue, to contribute to quiet diplomacy to ease tensions, even between countries with historically hostile relations.
As for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the official highlighted once again that a two-state solution is the only way to achieve real and sustainable peace.
When discussing global governance issues, he stressed the importance of reforming the UN Security Council, which he considers outdated.
"We must adapt global governance to our time through dialogue, not through war," Amirbayov called for more cooperation and less confrontation in the world.
