Alice Carvalho: Brazil strengthens integration of climate resilience into urban development

Brazil is strengthening the integration of climate resilience and social policy into its urban development system amid the increasing frequency of extreme climate events and the growing vulnerability of urban communities, Alice Carvalho, a representative of the Ministry of Cities of Brazil, said during a panel discussion held within the framework of World Urban Forum 13 in Baku.

Report quotes her as saying extreme climate events are increasingly affecting cities and the most vulnerable population groups across the country.

In this context, the National Climate Plan approved last year establishes a strategic approach that combines climate change adaptation with the principles of social justice.

"Resilience cannot be viewed separately from inclusion and equality, because it is the most vulnerable population groups that suffer the strongest consequences of climate change," Carvalho emphasized.
