Abbasov: US event on ethnic cleansing policy angered pro‑Armenian groups

The international conference titled "The Right of Return and Self-Determination: Double Standards and Selective Approaches", organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) on June 24 at the US Capitol in Washington, provoked discontent among pro‑Armenian organizations and circles, BIG Executive Director Abbas Abbasov said in an interview with Baku TV, Report informs.

According to him, the event was held after two months of negotiations.

"On June 23, pro‑Armenian and Armenian organizations attempted to intervene. There were certain appeals for the event to be postponed. I want to touch upon one symbolic point. The conference hall allocated to us was named after Nancy Pelosi. That person was pro-Armenian, had been the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, and was known for her unjust stance against Azerbaijan. Holding such an event on the policy of ethnic cleansing irritated pro-Armenian organizations and parties," he said.

Abbasov noted that five representatives of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) attended the conference: "They observed, took notes, and left without causing any provocations."

He stressed that Azerbaijan has no territorial claims and does not question Armenia's sovereignty: "This is about the right of return, based on international norms and legal principles. Armenians try to complicate the issue, but in reality, it is simple - ensuring the safe return of citizens to their ancestral lands."
