Mexico's Gilberto Mora makes World Cup history

Mexican national team player Gilberto Mora has entered World Cup history as the second‑youngest footballer to start in a playoff match, Report informs via foreign media outlets.
This milestone occurred during the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, when Mexico defeated Ecuador 2–0 at the Estadio Azteca. Mora was 17 years and 259 days old when he began the match in the starting lineup and played for 58 minutes.
It was noted that the only player younger than Mora to start in a World Cup playoff game was Brazilian legend Pelé, who appeared against Wales in 1958 at the age of 17 years and 239 days.
Mexico"s victory over Ecuador secured their place in the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the England–DR Congo match.
