Sacha Akira Backes assumes World Bank Group role in Azerbaijan

Sacha Akira Backes has assumed his duties as the World Bank Group's unified representative in Azerbaijan.

According to Report, citing the bank, Backes will represent the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) in this role, while also coordinating the World Bank Group's activities in Azerbaijan.

In line with the World Bank Group's Country Partnership Framework for Azerbaijan, he will support efforts to promote sustainable economic growth, develop the private sector and create new jobs, as well as expand access to finance for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

His areas of work will also include developing transport and digital connectivity, supporting the energy transition and strengthening resilience to climate change.

Backes has worked at the World Bank Group since 2007.

The World Bank Group has decided to move to a unified country representation model in Azerbaijan.

Initially, Backes was expected to be appointed solely as the World Bank's Country Manager for Azerbaijan.
