Governments and the international community must put an end to forced evictions, stated Lajana Manandhar, Secretary General of the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights, at the closing ceremony of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.
According to her, communities are open to meaningful dialogue to address existing challenges, and it is essential to establish equal partnerships with local communities and civil society organizations in the urban development process.
"Climate change is already exacerbating the housing crisis and having a severe impact, especially on vulnerable groups. Therefore, prioritizing climate-resilient housing policies, strengthening local financing mechanisms, and promoting nature-based solutions are of great importance," she said.
Manandhar emphasized that urban financing must serve the people, and safe, affordable housing should be guaranteed for every individual.
The Secretary General also highlighted the importance of supporting community-based and women-led housing initiatives: "They do not merely call for action, but are ready to contribute to the realization of these initiatives by collaborating with governments and international organizations."
