Yerlan Akkenzhenov: Kazakhstan to increase green energy share to 30% by 2030

Kazakhstan has committed to increasing the share of renewable energy sources to 30% by 2030.

Report informs that Kazakhstan's Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said this at the 31st Baku Energy Forum.

According to him, Kazakhstan has committed to obtaining an additional 8.4 GW of renewable energy by 2035.

"Currently, the share of renewable energy in our energy balance is 7%. This includes wind, solar and some hydrogen energy. But let us not forget how large Kazakhstan is. It is the ninth-largest country in the world," he said.

He added that countries are primarily seeking stability and energy security.

"In my opinion, energy security is not only about generating electricity, but also about its safe transmission. Therefore, renewable energy sources being developed in Kazakhstan must be supported by flexible generation. Kazakhstan's stable grid means a stable grid for Central Asia. Thus, grid stability is also a major challenge for us, and achieving it is our major goal," he said.

Akkenzhenov said Kazakhstan's energy balance currently consists of 70% coal generation and 7% renewable energy.

"However, Kazakhstan has signed the Paris Agreement, and we have committed to increasing the share of renewable energy sources to 30% by 2030. Therefore, we have signed major contracts with large global companies such as Total, Masdar and a number of Chinese companies to build both solar and wind generation sources in Kazakhstan," he said.
