XRG: Southern Gas Corridor becomes strategic route for Azerbaijani gas to Europe

The transportation of Azerbaijani natural gas through the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) is of strategic importance to the energy security and essential operations of a number of foreign countries, supplying gas to 16 countries, Bassem Tadros, XRG's Senior Vice President for Asset Management, said.

According to Report, Tadros made the remark at the 2nd Azerbaijan International Investment Forum (AIIF 2026). XRG is the global investment arm of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) of the UAE.

"A few weeks ago, we closed another deal with Azerbaijan, acquiring a stake in the Southern Gas Corridor. This project includes both an upstream segment and pipeline infrastructure running toward Georgia and Türkiye, as well as the TANAP and TAP pipelines, through which gas is supplied to a number of European countries," Tadros said.

He noted that the corridor has a total annual transportation capacity of 26 billion cubic meters of gas.

"With a capacity of 26 billion cubic meters per year and gas supplies to 16 countries, it can confidently be said that Azerbaijani gas transported through this corridor supports the essential operations and electricity supply of these countries," he said.

It was previously reported that on November 3, 2025, XRG signed a non-binding Heads of Terms agreement with Azerbaijan's Ministry of Economy regarding the acquisition of a stake in Southern Gas Corridor CJSC during the ADIPEC exhibition and conference in the UAE. Southern Gas Corridor CJSC, which began operations in 2014, holds stakes in gas production assets and a pipeline network spanning a total of 3,500 kilometers. The infrastructure enables the transportation of natural gas from the Caspian basin through Türkiye to Southern Europe.
