Türkiye wants to expand green energy supplies to Europe through new energy corridors

Türkiye intends to expand cross-border electricity transmission infrastructure and strengthen its role as a transit hub for renewable energy supplies to Europe, Turkish Deputy Energy Minister Zafer Demircan said at the launch conference of the Connectivity Agenda Platform in Brussels, Report informs.

He stated that Türkiye is placing particular emphasis on so-called green corridors – projects to transmit electricity from the South Caucasus countries, including Azerbaijan and Georgia, to Europe via Türkiye.

"We strive not only to ensure the transit of electricity through Türkiye, but also to integrate our own renewable energy production capacity into these corridors so that the European market can receive more electricity from renewable sources," Demircan said.

The global energy sector is undergoing a period of transformation, and countries need reliable and sustainable energy supplies to support their economies, the deputy minister said. He added that diversification of supply sources remains a key element of energy security.

He also noted that Türkiye, thanks to its geographical location, can play an important role in providing Europe with energy resources and developing cross-border energy infrastructure.

The deputy minister added that the successful implementation of interconnection projects requires both political cooperation between countries and investments in modernizing national power grids.

He cited the existing interconnection between Türkiye and Bulgaria, with a capacity of approximately 500 megawatts, as an example. He stated that further expansion of grid capacity will be necessary to increase renewable energy supplies to Europe.

Demircan added that developing cross-border connections could help address the issue of uneven renewable energy generation. The ability to exchange electricity between neighboring countries will allow for more efficient use of excess generation and increase the flexibility of energy systems.

"If we succeed in creating effective energy interconnectivity in our region, this will help address many issues related to energy sustainability and economics," Demircan said.
