SOCAR, the state oil company of Azerbaijan, has identified over 1,100 leaks using OCE technology from the French company Total, SOCAR Vice President Afgan Isayev said at the Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW2025), Report informs.
He stated that this result was achieved using micro-sensors mounted on drones, which allow for precise leak location.
"We are ashamed to admit it, but we have detected over 1,100 leaks. Of these, we have fixed 800 and returned 150 million cubic meters of gas to the system," Isayev said.
The vice president also emphasized that the impact of methane is many times greater than that of carbon dioxide: methane is 28 times more potent than CO₂ in the medium term, and 83 times more potent than CO₂ in the long term, making leak repairs crucial.
Isayev added that the company also uses the GHGSat program, which has enabled the detection of methane leaks. "I also recommend using this program, as it is very useful for identifying unexpected leaks," he said.
