SOCAR Green to decarbonize Azerbaijan's biggest electricity consumer

SOCAR Green has developed a roadmap for decarbonizing the operations of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency, SOCAR Green CEO Elmir Musayev said at a panel discussion during the annual meetings of the Islamic Development Bank Group (IsDB) in Baku, Report informs.

"We are implementing a joint project with the largest consumer of electricity in the country – the State Agency for Water Resources of Azerbaijan. We have developed a roadmap for them, according to which we will decarbonize their operations and simultaneously implement energy efficiency solutions, which represents a fundamentally new direction for our country.

Increasing renewable energy capacity in Azerbaijan is of paramount importance, but it is equally important to pay attention to energy efficiency and the rational use of energy resources both nationally and globally," Musayev emphasized.

According to him, SOCAR Green is actively developing initiatives in other technological areas as well.

"In particular, we are promoting geothermal energy in Azerbaijan. We also have two pilot projects in offshore wind energy. Azerbaijan has significant technical potential on the Caspian Sea coast, and each of our two 200 MW pilot projects can be scaled up to 2-3 GW. Furthermore, we are conducting extensive work on promising technologies such as biofuels, biochar, and biogas. We expect to launch flagship projects in this area in the foreseeable future," the company's CEO added.
