Battery energy storage systems (BESS) will become a key component of Azerbaijan's energy export corridors, Elchin Targuluev, Director of Technology and Innovation at SOCAR Green, said during a webinar titled "Development of Infrastructure, Electromobility and Renewable Energy Storage Solutions in Azerbaijan, Report informs.
"The most common and widely known application of BESS is ensuring power grid stability. These systems can support grid frequency, provide reserve capacity, regulate voltage, enable black start and perform other functions. At the same time, they can bring significant benefits to energy project developers. For example, for solar power producers, they enable the time-shifting of generation.
"At present, peak generation occurs around midday, while the highest demand for electricity is observed closer to the evening hours. With energy storage systems, we can shift generated electricity to periods of higher consumption. In addition, this reduces the need for curtailment. As the share of renewable energy sources increases, grid operators will have to resort to generation curtailment," Targuluev said.
In his view, battery systems can help developers address this issue. Instead of being forced to reduce generation, they can store energy and feed it into the grid during periods of lower generation.
"And finally, what will become particularly important in the near future is export corridors. Azerbaijan will create numerous energy export corridors, and battery energy storage systems will become an essential component of them," he added.
