SOCAR Green: Azerbaijan starts assessing wind resources for offshore power plants

Three offshore wind energy projects, each with a capacity of 200 MW, are currently undergoing preliminary assessment in Azerbaijan, Report informs, citing statements by Director of Technology and Innovation at SOCAR Green Elchin Targuluyev during the webinar "Infrastructure Development, E-Mobility and Renewable Energy Storage Solutions in Azerbaijan."

"Initial land plots have already been agreed upon for these projects, with wind resource assessment work already underway at one of the sites. Research on the remaining two locations will commence in the near future. However, these are merely pilot initiatives that precede significantly larger projects," Targuluyev emphasized.

He also recalled that, according to preliminary forecasts, the volume of offshore wind generation in the country is projected to reach approximately 6–7 GW by 2040.

According to data from an International Finance Corporation (IFC) report, the technical potential of Azerbaijan's offshore wind energy exceeds 150 GW, while initial estimates of commercially viable potential stand at around 38 GW.
