Slovakia is exploring the possibility of signing a long-term contract to import around 1 billion cubic metres of gas annually from Azerbaijan, Algeria and the United States as it plans to phase out Russian gas imports.
According to Report, citing foreign media, Slovak Economy Minister Denisa Saková said Slovakia would need a new gas supply contract from September 2027. Azerbaijan, Algeria and the United States are being considered as potential suppliers.
Saková noted that the underground gas storage facilities of Slovakia's main state-owned gas supplier, SPP, currently hold 17.5 terawatt-hours of gas. This accounts for around 35% of the country's annual gas consumption and will help ensure sufficient reserves for the upcoming heating season.
Under the European Union's plan, restrictions on Russian gas imports are due to take effect in 2027. Against this backdrop, Slovakia is seeking alternative sources of supply.
It should be noted that 10 countries importing Azerbaijani gas are members of the European Union. Overall, Azerbaijan exports gas to 16 countries, including Türkiye, Georgia and Syria. Azerbaijan has expanded the geographical reach of its gas exports through the Greece–Bulgaria Interconnector (IGB).
