Shmyhal: Ukraine negotiating with Azerbaijan and Türkiye on electricity transit to Europe

Ukraine is holding talks with Azerbaijan and Türkiye on the transit of electricity to Europe, Ukraine"s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal said at the 31st Baku Energy Forum.

According to Report, he said Ukraine is actively developing cooperation with European partners in the field of energy integration. After joining the European power system, the country has focused on expanding interconnections in electricity and gas with the European market.

"Currently, our main focus is on developing interconnections in both electricity and gas sectors with the large European market. In this context, we have very good cooperation and are negotiating with Azerbaijan and Türkiye on using Ukraine as a European gateway for all types of energy. This is possible thanks to our large gas storage facilities and a very powerful electricity network," he said.

The minister added that in the context of war, strengthening the resilience of energy infrastructure is especially important. For this purpose, the country is decentralizing its electricity generation system, introducing new approaches to energy supply, and increasing gas-fired generation capacity.

He noted that under Ukraine"s energy strategy, the share of gas generation is expected to reach at least 25% of total electricity production in the future.

The minister emphasized that oil and gas remain strategically important resources for both Ukraine and Europe, and called on the Caspian region and other partners to expand cooperation in the energy sector.
