Ibraev: Kyrgyzstan among largest producers of 'green' electricity in Central Asia

Kyrgyzstan generates around 90% of its electricity from hydropower, Kyrgyzstan"s Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev said at the 31st Baku Energy Forum.

According to Report, he said that the country"s energy sector is based primarily on water resources and hydropower.

"At the same time, Kyrgyzstan maintains close cooperation with neighboring states within the regional power system and electricity exchange framework," the minister noted.

He added that to cover electricity shortages, the country cooperates with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, receiving support from regional partners.

"Meanwhile, Central Asian states are jointly working on the rational use of water resources and energy security issues," he said.

Ibraev also reported that the country is implementing projects to modernize its energy infrastructure, including the renovation of substations and hydropower plants, many of which were built more than 60 years ago.

He noted that the country"s largest hydropower plant, with a capacity of 1,440 MW, is undergoing modernization, while Kyrgyzstan is also developing solar and wind energy projects.

According to the minister, thanks to its high share of hydropower and the development of small hydropower plants and other renewable sources, Kyrgyzstan is already one of the largest producers of "green" electricity in the region.

"I believe our reforms and electricity production approach are a very correct solution for today"s energy supply needs," he added.
