Geotechnical and geophysical surveys of Black Sea seabed begin

Geotechnical and geophysical studies of the seabed have begun within the framework of a subsea energy cable project across the Black Sea to assess the feasibility of building the infrastructure, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Inga Pkhaladze said at the 31st Baku Energy Forum.

According to Report, she said that the South Caucasus and Europe should be connected by two energy corridors, which will not only improve the resilience of energy systems but also create conditions for electricity exports to the European market.

The first project foresees the laying of a 1300 MW submarine cable between Georgia and Romania via the Black Sea. The second is a joint initiative by Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary under the Green Energy Corridor (GECO), which will enable up to 4000 MW of electricity exports to Europe.

Pkhaladze noted that the feasibility studies for both projects have already been completed. Under the GECO project, Black Sea research is also expected to begin this year.

She added that granting the project PMI status by the European Parliament and the European Commission in early 2026 will accelerate permits and implementation with the support of Black Sea countries.

According to the deputy minister, the project serves the interests not only of participating countries but also of Türkiye, Bulgaria and other neighboring states, contributing to the development and diversification of renewable energy.
