Countries can reduce dependence on imported fuel through electrification, IRENA chief says

Countries can reduce their dependence on imported fuel through electrification, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera said during Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), Report informs.

According to him, energy security is once again leading among global priorities today: "Recent geostrategic events have reminded us once again how vulnerable our economies are to fossil fuel price fluctuations and supply disruptions. This confirms a fundamental point: energy security ultimately lies in reducing the risk of disruptions beyond our control."

La Camera emphasized that electrification offers a direct and practical response in this regard: "By electrifying key sectors, such as transport, construction, and industry, with an increasing share of renewable electricity, countries can reduce their dependence on imported fuel, improve energy efficiency, stabilize energy costs by lowering them, and strengthen the resilience of their energy systems. That is exactly why IRENA believes that the coming decade must become the decade of electrification, accelerating the transition to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable energy system."
