COP31 aims to halve the growth in global waste generation by 2035, Daniele Violetti, Senior Director for Program Coordination at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said.

According to Report, he made the remarks on the fourth day of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).

Violetti said the world is now in a transition period in which the outcomes of the first Global Stocktake need to be translated into national plans and investment decisions.

He noted that implementation does not take place through negotiations alone, but also in the real economy through partnerships, technology and finance, making the Global Climate Action Agenda an important reference point.

According to Violetti, the Marrakech Partnership has for more than a decade connected governments with cities, businesses, the financial sector and civil society to turn negotiated decisions into practical action.

He also highlighted the role of Azerbaijan's COP29 Presidency, saying the Baku Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Agenda gave the circular economy a clear place in the climate agenda.

Violetti said Türkiye, which will assume the COP31 Presidency, has already set ambitious headline targets for 2035, including increasing electricity's share of final energy demand from the current 20% to 35%, halving the growth in global waste generation and reducing energy intensity in the building sector by at least 25%.
