Special drones designed to monitor methane emissions are already being used in Azerbaijan, Chingiz Orujov, Business Development Specialist in Renewable Energy at TotalEnergies, said during panel discussions at the Baku Expo Center as part of the 31st International Exhibition "Caspian Oil and Gas".
He said that drones used to detect methane leaks were tested at the Oil Rocks offshore field.
"We brought this drone to Azerbaijan and, together with SOCAR, used it at Oil Rocks, as well as at the Absheron field. We are now seeing positive results from this monitoring. The technology allows us to detect not only methane leaks but also their volume," he said.
The company representative noted that the first step in reducing emissions is accurately identifying leak locations and their scale.
