Bulgaria receives over 60% of its annual gas consumption from Azerbaijan

The total volume of natural gas supplied from Azerbaijan accounts for over 60% of Bulgaria's annual consumption, Bulgarian Deputy Energy Minister Kiril Temelkov said during the Baku Energy Week, Report informs referring to the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy.

"Under a long-term contract between two state-owned companies, Bulgaria provides a significant portion of the natural gas supplies for domestic consumption in our country. The total volume of natural gas supplied to our country from Azerbaijan accounts for over 60% of our annual consumption. Part of this volume is also distributed to the markets of neighboring countries, making Azerbaijan a reliable and important partner for both Bulgaria and our neighboring countries," Temelkov said.

He added that Bulgaria is "precisely for this reason" actively negotiating with the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy to expand the scope of this cooperation.

Temelkov also met with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) representatives during his visit to Baku.

"The talks focused on deepening regional cooperation and opportunities to implement joint projects of mutual interest," the statement reads.

Azerbaijan supplies natural gas to Bulgaria via the Southern Gas Corridor and the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria.

Initially, the agreement, signed in 2013 for 25 years, provided for the supply of 1 billion cubic meters of gas per year. However, amid the energy crisis and Sofia's growing needs, volumes gradually increased: in 2024, supplies reached 1.896 billion cubic meters, and in 2025 - 1.931 billion cubic meters.
