Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan exploring grid integration for green electricity trade

Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan are exploring the possibility of integrating their power grids to develop trade in green electricity, with a long-term goal of exporting it to neighboring countries and the European market, Tural Aliyev, Chief Executive Officer of the Green Corridor Alliance, said during a panel discussion at the Second Azerbaijan International Investment Forum (AIIF 2026) in Baku, Report informs.

According to Aliyev, Azerbaijan's experience in the oil and gas sector makes the country a reliable pillar of regional energy. The next step is to leverage this accumulated experience in developing renewable energy.

To achieve this, he noted, it is necessary to pay greater attention to cross-border green electricity transmission systems, invest heavily in renewable energy, and integrate regional markets for trading such electricity.

"This transition cannot happen in isolation. A suitable regulatory framework, aligned policies, and a reliable supply chain are essential. Above all, we need economically viable projects capable of attracting international investment and capital," Aliyev said.

According to him, the decision by Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan to explore renewable energy potential and the feasibility of interconnecting their power grids is linked to large-scale transformations in the region's energy sector. Cooperation will allow for increased electricity trade and enable the assessment of export opportunities for additional volumes, primarily targeting the European market.

"If you look at the map, it becomes clear that working together will allow these countries to achieve far more than individual steps by each of them to develop power transmission," Aliyev emphasized.
