Azerbaijan is expanding its electricity export opportunities alongside increasing its renewable energy capacity, Deputy Energy Minister Orkhan Zeynalov said at Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), Report informs.
Zeynalov said Azerbaijan was advancing its green energy transition by expanding renewable generation capacity and cross-border transmission corridors.
By 2027, 11 solar and wind projects with a combined capacity of 2 GW are expected to be integrated into the national power system, he said.
The share of renewable energy sources in total installed capacity is projected to reach 39% by 2030 and around 43% by 2035.
According to Zeynalov, commissioning 2 GW of renewable energy capacity by the end of next year alone would generate around 5 billion kWh of electricity, save approximately 1.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 million tonnes annually.
He added that Azerbaijan plans to develop nearly 8 GW of onshore and offshore renewable energy capacity by 2032.
The country intends to use part of that energy to power planned data and artificial intelligence centers and export electricity through four interconnectors.
"Creating renewable energy generation capacity is only one part of the task. Today, energy connectivity across the region stretching from Central Asia to Europe is rapidly reshaping the geography," Zeynalov said.
