Baku Climate Action Week has been included in the official programme of the United Nations, Nigar Arpadarai, UN High-Level Climate Champion and member of the Azerbaijani Parliament, said this during the "Dialogue on Climate Issues with Young Journalists" held as part of Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2026), Report informs..
She noted that the global security system and international law are currently changing rapidly.
"Every day, when we open the news, we encounter conflicts, economic crises and various tense processes. We do not know exactly what the situation will be like years from now. Therefore, we must firmly hold on to the tools we have gained and protect Azerbaijan's position on every platform," she said.
Arpadarai noted that climate change has already become a serious geopolitical and economic issue.
"Small island states are particularly concerned about the risk of rising sea levels. This is not merely an environmental issue, but directly concerns the future existence of states. On the other hand, there are significant financial and economic interests in the green transition process. The green transition should not come at a cost of trillions of dollars. The private sector has already made major investments in this area, and the process continues," she said.
Arpadarai noted that Baku Climate Action Week was initially planned as a small initiative, but later attracted significant interest.
"Drawing on London's experience, we organized the first and second climate weeks. As a successful outcome of the initiative, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has now included this event in its official programme, and Baku Climate Action Week was held as an official UN climate week," she said.
She also emphasized that such platforms play an important role in ensuring the continuity of the 14 thematic initiatives put forward by Azerbaijan during COP29, including projects related to agriculture, energy, water resources, digitalization and urban development (UTAR).
