AGEC (Azerbaijan Green Energy Company) and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, a global clean energy leader, signed a collaboration agreement to explore the development of new renewable energy projects in Azerbaijan.
The agreement was signed during a meeting between the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the UAE National Security Advisor, who also serves as Deputy Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, further strengthening the longstanding strategic relationship between the two countries and their cooperation in the field of clean energy.
Under the agreement, AGEC and Masdar will explore the potential expansion of the 230-megawatt (MW) Garadagh Solar PV project to a capacity of up to 350MW, together with the potential addition of a battery energy storage system (BESS) of up to 200 megawatt-hours (MWh).
The companies will also explore the development of a 100MW round-the-clock (RTC) renewable energy project in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The proposed project would build on Masdar"s experience in combining renewable energy generation with battery storage to support the delivery of reliable, flexible and dispatchable clean power.
Mir Jamal Pashayev, Chief Executive Officer of AGEC, said:
"AGEC represents our long-term commitment to supporting Azerbaijan's transition toward a more diversified, secure and sustainable energy future. We believe that the development of renewable energy is not only an investment opportunity, but also an important contribution to the country's economic resilience, energy security and future generations. We see significant potential for collaboration with leading global energy companies, and we are particularly pleased to explore opportunities for cooperation with Masdar, one of the world's leading renewable energy companies. We believe that combining international expertise with Azerbaijan's strong renewable energy potential can accelerate the development of high-quality projects. Through AGEC, we are committed to supporting the development of high-quality renewable energy projects and building strong partnerships that create lasting value for Azerbaijan".
Hayala Naghiyeva, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of AGEC, said:
"AGEC is pleased to partner with Masdar in advancing the next phase of Azerbaijan's renewable energy development. This collaboration brings together Masdar's global expertise and AGEC's local investment and development capabilities to explore projects that can deliver not only additional energy capacity, but greater flexibility, reliability and energy security. The proposed expansion of the Garadagh Solar PV project and the exploration of round-the-clock renewable power in Nakhchivan represent an important step toward integrating renewable generation with energy storage and developing more resilient energy solutions for Azerbaijan.
We look forward to turning these opportunities into bankable, high-impact projects that contribute to Azerbaijan's long-term sustainable growth".
The proposed 100MW RTC renewable energy project in Nakhchivan would explore the combination of renewable generation and large-scale battery energy storage to provide reliable and flexible clean electricity. The project would build on Masdar's pioneering work in Abu Dhabi, where the company is developing a gigascale round-the-clock renewable energy project combining solar photovoltaic generation with battery storage to deliver up to 1GW of continuous baseload renewable power.
The new collaboration reflects the growing importance of renewable energy, energy storage and flexible clean-power solutions in Azerbaijan's evolving energy sector. By combining international renewable energy expertise with local investment and development capabilities, AGEC and Masdar aim to explore projects that can support Azerbaijan's growing electricity needs while contributing to a more diversified, secure and sustainable energy future.
The partnership also creates opportunities to advance innovative renewable energy solutions that can strengthen the integration of variable renewable generation into the electricity system and support the long-term resilience of Azerbaijan's energy infrastructure.
