Transition to 12-year school education in Azerbaijan not planned

A transition to a 12-year education system in schools is not planned in Azerbaijan, Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev said at a press conference dedicated to the new academic year, Report informs.

According to the minister, this issue is currently not relevant.

"The issue of transitioning to 12-year education in schools is not on the agenda. Nothing of the kind is foreseen in the near future," he said.

The minister also noted that a transition to a three-year bachelor's degree program is possible for certain specialties.

"If experts also give a positive assessment on this issue, it can be implemented. For instance, the 'tourism organization' specialty could possibly be mastered in three years. But one must also consider specialties such as law. In my opinion, training an engineer is a rather complex process, and the graduate's age should also be taken into account here. When transitioning to the Bologna system, we tried to fit all specialties into a single template. Now, some specialties are designed for five years, and others for four. We must also consider the international documents we have joined. Overall, reducing all specialties to three years is not a subject of discussion," Amrullayev added.
