PISA 2025 shows Azerbaijan has recovered from pandemic-related learning losses

The results of PISA 2025 show that Azerbaijan has managed to overcome the learning losses that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev said during a presentation of the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025.

At the same time, according to Amrullayev, schoolchildren continue to face difficulties in understanding and interpreting mathematical problems.

The minister explained that the PISA scoring system differs significantly from the points-based scale used in university entrance examinations.

"In the PISA system, a score of 500 points is considered average, while 400 points is below average. A completely different scale is used here. Therefore, a PISA score of 450 cannot be compared with university entrance exam scores," Amrullayev noted.

According to him, Azerbaijan ranks 49th in the PISA ranking for mathematical literacy.

At the same time, students in Baku recorded results in this area that were higher than those of developed cities.

"The increased attention being paid to mathematics in recent years is already producing results. Mathematics teachers have played a particularly important role in this," the minister emphasized.
