Baku residents to witness Perseid meteor shower

Residents of Baku will have the opportunity to observe the Perseid meteor shower from next week through August 24.

According to Report, citing the Astrophysics Department of the Physics Faculty at Baku State University (BSU), the peak of the meteor shower is expected on August 13 at 06:00 Baku time (GMT+4)

The Perseids occur as Earth passes through a trail of dust particles and small fragments of rock left behind by the 109P/Swift–Tuttle comet. The meteor shower derives its name from the constellation Perseus, where its radiant - the point in the sky from which the meteors appear to originate - is located.

The radiant will remain visible from Baku throughout the night, allowing observers to watch the meteor activity at any time after sunset. It will reach its highest point in the sky shortly before dawn, around 06:00 local time.

Astronomers recommend choosing dark locations away from urban lighting to ensure the best viewing conditions.

Weather permitting, observers on the night of August 12–13, particularly during the early morning hours, may be able to see dozens or even more than a hundred meteors.
