The COP29 climate conference placed Azerbaijan at the center of global climate diplomacy, while the momentum created during the conference continues to grow, said UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmytro Shlapachenko during a roundtable held as part of Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2026), Report informs.
According to Shlapachenko, Azerbaijan demonstrated how climate leadership can generate the momentum needed for international cooperation.
He noted that Baku Climate Action Week represents a continuation of efforts launched within the framework of COP29, as well as broader work to promote sustainable development and climate action.
"In Azerbaijan, we have seen how climate leadership can create momentum. COP29 placed the country at the center of global climate diplomacy, and this momentum continues through Baku Climate Action Week and broader efforts to advance sustainable development and climate action," Shlapachenko stressed.
He also said that it is now important to turn the climate momentum that has been created into concrete and measurable results.
According to Shlapachenko, climate leadership should ultimately be assessed not only by decisions adopted and commitments made, but also by actual emissions reductions, strengthened resilience, mobilization of financing, and protection of people and their livelihoods.
