Human activity - from energy, industry and transportation to deforestation and armed conflicts - is one of the main driving forces behind climate change and has a significant impact on the planet's physical and ecological systems, Sadig Gurbanov, chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee on Natural Resources, Energy and Ecology, said speaking at the Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).
Report quotes him as saying declining water resources, the spread of wildfires, increased heat stress in cities, more frequent floods and landslides, as well as the melting of mountain glaciers demonstrate how closely interconnected the processes taking place on the planet are.
"Each of these phenomena may have separate natural causes. However, when viewed on a global scale and over the long term, a more important picture emerges: the Earth's climate system is changing, and anthropogenic factors caused by human activity play a significant role in this process," Gurbanov said.
Gurbanov separately highlighted the environmental burden caused by wars. According to him, armed conflicts not only result in human casualties and the destruction of urban infrastructure, but also become a source of additional emissions into the atmosphere.
According to Gurbanov, climate-related events being held in Azerbaijan can also contribute to intensifying discussions ahead of COP31, which will be held in Türkiye.
