Khayam Mammadov: Number of floods has increased in Azerbaijan

The number of floods in Azerbaijan has increased, causing damage to infrastructure and the economy, Khayam Mammadov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan (ADSEA), said at the event "Early Warning Systems and Climate-Resilient Cities" within the framework of WUF13 in Baku.

Report quotes him as saying droughts, floods, and heavy rains are no longer a problem of the future.

"They are occurring more frequently and are becoming more severe each year. These phenomena damage infrastructure, affect the economy, and reduce people"s quality of life," he said.

"The water sector is one of the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. While previously Azerbaijan experienced around 10–20 floods annually, this number has now increased several times," Mammadov noted.

He added that to improve climate resilience, ADSEA operates in line with the national water strategy and other state development programs, supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
