The Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant has been one of the biggest sources of environmental risk in the South Caucasus since its inception, Islam Mustafayev, Chairman of the Ruzgar Public Union, said at a briefing held by the Environmental Protection First NGO coalition on the "Environmental impact of mining activities carried out in the territory of Armenia," Report informs.

According to him, the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant features two reactor power units: one was damaged during the 1988 earthquake and is currently non-operational, while the second was later restarted and is currently functioning.
