Azerbaijan chairs UNEP subcommittee meeting in Nairobi

On September 7, in Nairobi, the 13th annual subcommittee meeting of the UNEP Committee of Permanent Representatives kicked off under Azerbaijan's chairmanship, Azerbaijan's Permanent Mission to the UN Office in Nairobi told Report.

The mentioned meeting, held once a year, is the main intersessional gathering of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA).

With the participation of representatives from more than 150 member states and civil society organizations, the five‑day meeting will address UNEP's overall work agenda, the implementation of the 2026–2029 strategic plan, and the results and future plans of multilateral efforts on environmental protection and climate change.

Azerbaijan's Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Nairobi, Sultan Hajiyev, has served since June last year as Chair of the Bureau of the UNEP Committee of Permanent Representatives for the 2025–2027 term. Within this chairmanship, Azerbaijan contributes to related processes together with UNEA's current president, Jamaica's Minister of Water, Environment, and Climate Change Matthew Samuda.

The meeting highlighted Azerbaijan's role in the global climate agenda, particularly through the UNFCCC Climate Week and COP29's Baku Climate Action Week 2026, currently being held in Baku.

It also noted Azerbaijan's hosting of UNEP's World Environment Day in May and the 3rd Shamakhi Meeting of UNFCCC negotiation group chairs in July. On the first day of the event, Azerbaijan and Jamaica jointly organized an official reception for participants of the 13th annual subcommittee meeting.
