Azerbaijan allocates $5 million to support small island states

Azerbaijan has allocated $5 million to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as part of the global climate agenda, Patricia Scotland, a representative of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, said during a panel discussion held as part of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), Report informs.

She noted that during its COP29 presidency, Azerbaijan committed to supporting Small Island Developing States, leading to the establishment of a Commonwealth fund to facilitate the development and implementation of relevant projects.

Scotland said the Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub had helped mobilize $594.34 million with less than $8 million in funding. Support has been provided to 26 countries, 123 projects have been implemented, and 4,139 government officials have received training.

She also stressed the importance of the Baku Road Map for Adaptation and the Global Climate Transparency Platform.

According to Scotland, countries need consistency and commitment, as they are tired of promises that do not translate into concrete results.

"Azerbaijan has demonstrated what consistent and purposeful leadership can achieve. We now have the technology, capabilities and knowledge to do this. We need to work together and in partnership," she stressed.
