AI can reduce climate forecast preparation to minutes, WMO secretary-general says

Artificial intelligence is capable of reducing the preparation of climate forecasts from several weeks to a matter of minutes, increasing their accuracy, and significantly strengthening early warning systems for climate risks, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Celeste Saulo said during a video message to the participants of the 4th Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2026), Report informs.

"We need to use all the tools available in our arsenal of climate solutions. Artificial intelligence opens up new possibilities for strengthening these capabilities," the WMO secretary-general said.

According to her, AI is capable of generating forecasts in a matter of minutes, improving the accuracy of predictions, and performing calculations that previously took weeks.

At the same time, Saulo emphasized the need for the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

She drew attention to the ongoing retreat of glaciers in the area from the Himalayas to the Caucasus. According to her, artificial intelligence is capable of contributing to the development of glacier monitoring and the improvement of early warning systems.

"The 4th Baku Climate Action Week must become a platform where we can strengthen international cooperation, attract investment, and develop the capacity necessary to ensure the accessibility of the benefits of artificial intelligence for all," the WMO secretary-general emphasized.
